L'Isan (Issan, Isaan ou อีสาน!!) est la région la plus pauvre de la Thaïlande. Pauvre économiquement parlant (la principale activité économique étant l'agriculture), mais riche culturellement. Cette région est bordée au nord et à l'est par le Laos et au sud par le Cambodge. On y parle le thai isan, plus près du laotien que du thai parlé dans le reste du pays. On y parle également le khmer dans le sud.

On peut aussi bien aller contempler des peintures rupestres ou artéfacts anciens touchant la culture du riz, qu'aller assister à un combat de coqs traditionnel. Mais ce qui fait la renommée de cette région du nord-est de la Thaïlande, c'est sa production d'un grand nombre de boxeurs du muay thaï (boxe thaï). Ce sport (ou noble art thaï!) offre une chance exceptionnelle de se sortir de la pauvreté.

La culture de l'Isan est avant tout Laotienne. On peut donc y remarquer de grandes similitudes avec le pays voisin, que ce soit au niveau de l'architecture, des festivités, de la nourriture ou des habitudes vestimentaires.

Profitez des visites de villages pour faire un saut aux temples bouddhistes, peut-être aurez-vous la chance d'assister à l'un des nombreux festivals traditionnels!

Isan (Isaan, Isarn, Issan, Esarn or อีสาน!!) is the poorest region in Thailand. Economically poor (the economy is mainly based on agriculture), but culturally rich. The region is bordered by Laos in the North and East, and by Cambodia in the South. The main language is Isan, a different kind of Thai that is spoken in the rest of Thailand. Linguistically, it is closer to Lao. Some people living in the South also speak Khmer (due to its history and proximity to Cambodia).

You can gaze at cliff paintings, or ancient rice culture artifacts, and on the other end of the spectrum you can attend a traditional cock fight! But one thing Isan is renowned for, is producing a great number of muay thai boxers. This sport offers an exceptional opportunity to escape from poverty.

The culture of Isan is predominantly Lao. You can therefore notice great similarities with this neighbouring country. They share affinities in architecture, festivals, cuisine and dressing habits.

While you’re enjoying visiting the villages, take the opportunity to admire the Buddhist temples. You might be lucky and get to witness one of the numerous traditional festivals!
