Considérée comme l'une des plus anciennes villes du sud de la Thaïlande, Nakhon Si Thammarat offre multitudes d'activités pour les voyageurs responsables. Cette ville historique est la capitale de la province du même nom.

Quelques incontournables:

Le Wat Phra Mahathat Woromaha Vihan a été construit au moment de la création de la ville, soit au 3e ou 4e siècle (les données ne sont pas très claires...). Il s'agit du plus important temple de la région. Le stûpa (complexe central du bâtiment) de 77 mètres est décoré de plusieurs reliques de Bouddha qui auraient été amenés du Sri Lanka il y a plus de 1700 ans! On y trouve même une dent de Bouddha!

Le Parc National Khao Luang, de 570 km carrés, offre différentes randonnées permettant d'apprécier nombre de chutes et une grande variété au niveau de la faune et de la flore. Ne manquez surtout pas l'impressionnante chute Namtok Karom située au sud du parc.

Informez vous aussi sur le Parc National Namtok Yong, le site archéologique de Khao Kha, le Musée National de Nakhon Si Thammarat, la fortification construite par le Roi Thammasokarat, les plages de Hat Sichon et Hat Hin Ngam... et évidemment, sur les fameux spectacles de marionnettes d'ombres de Mr. Suchart Subsin!

Some must-sees:

The Wat Phra Mahathat Woromaha Vihan was built at the time of the city’s foundation, around the 3rd or 4th century (data isn’t clear on that). It is the most important temple of the region. Its chedi (central building of the complex) is 77 metres high and decorated with many relics of Buddha that were brought from Sri Lanka more than 1,700 years ago! You can even find a relic of one of Buddha’s teeth!

The Khao Luang National Park (570 square kilometres) offers a number of trekking opportunities that will allow you to appreciate a lot of waterfalls and also a great variety of wildlife and flora. Don’t miss the impressive Namtok Karom waterfall located in the south of the Park.

Also, check out Namtok Yong National Park, the archaeological site of Khao Kha, Nakkhon Si Thammarat National Museum, the Old City Wall constructed by King Thammasokarat, the beaches of Hat Sichon and Hat Hin Ngam… and, of course, Mr. Cushart Subsin’s famous shadow puppets!
