Angkor Wat, the most well-preserved temple in the region since its creation by Suryavarman II at the beginning of the 12th century, is Cambodia's main tourist attraction. It is also the only temple to have kept its religious purpose and is now the country's symbol : you can even see it on the national flag !
This imperial and religious compound has typical Kmer architecture. It represents Mount Meru, home of the gods in Hindu Mythology. The site is visited and admired for its great beauty, architectural harmony and its extensive "bas-reliefs" on the walls. It is considered by many to be the 8th wonder of the world.
Pour son importance culturelle, architecturale et religieuse.
***
For its cultural, architectural and religious importance.
