Essaouira, autrefois appelée Mogador, est une ville forteresse au cachet architectural authentique et une histoire très ancienne (sites fréquentés par les Romains et Phéniciens). En plus d'y trouver nombre d'activités culturelles riches et variées, on peut aussi marchander dans les différents marchés, se détendre sur ses plages ou même visiter ses îles magnifiques. Et si vous y êtes, profitez-en pour explorer les différentes réserves (entre autres, réserve de faucons rares) et informez-vous sur cette arbre unique au monde qui s'adapte aux conditions climatiques locales et qui donne un fruit duquel on fabrique l'huile d'argane. Cet arbre a été classé par l'UNESCO en 1999 comme patrimoine universel.

Au-delà des attraits décrits plus haut, Essaouira est un lieu exceptionnel de coexistence pacifique entre différentes religions et ethnies (musulmans, juifs, chrétiens). La ville est considérée comme un véritable havre de paix et de tolérance. Elle est aussi le domicile d'un grand nombre d'artistes de tout acabit (peintres, musiciens, écrivains...) qui ont trouvé le lieu idéal pour la création : un véritable musée à ciel ouvert!

C'est aussi dans cette ville que se tient le Festival Gnaoua et Musiques du Monde.

Essaouira, formerly called Mogador, is a fortified city with quite an interesting architecture and very ancient history (some of the city’s sites were frequented by Romans and Phoenicians). Not only can you find a great variety of cultural activities, but you can also bargain at the numerous markets, relax on the beach or visit the magnificent islands. And while you’re there, why not head down to one of the many protected areas, where, amongst other things, you can see rare hawks. Also, don’t forget to get information on the unique type of tree that only grows in this region, and whose fruit is essential in the making of argan oil. This tree has been added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Beyond the attractions mentioned, Essaouira is an exceptional example of pacific coexistence between different religious and ethnic groups (Muslims, Jews, Christians). The city is considered to be a true haven of peace, a testament to total tolerance. It is also a town where a large number of artists of all sorts (painters, musicians, writers…) live because they feel it’s the perfect scene to create in: it really becomes a living museum!

It is also in this city that is held the Gnaoua World Music Festival.
